Prompt Security Patches Best Strategy for
Preventing Disaster

Internet Explorer Patching

The month of April is infamous for computer related attacks, data breaches and malware distribution.  April 1st (April fool's day) in particular has a history as being a time when cybercriminals' release viruses as jokes to spread chaos.  While April 1st has passed it is important to remember that malware attacks are not limited to a single day and a vulnerable system is vulnerable all year long.

One of the worst malware releases in the last few years has been the Conficker Computer worm.  This single piece of malware has infected over 12 million computer systems worldwide.  Computer worms such as Conficker make use of program vulnerabilities to attack systems resources and propagate themselves to connected networks.  System vulnerability exploits function like a backdoor into a computer system.   Even if an active Antivirus or firewall is installed it becomes possible to bypass and infect the system.  While most vulnerabilities are eventually corrected, business networks remain at risk if people don't take the initiative to keep up to date with patches.

Prompt security patches and system monitors are two of the greatest security measures your business can take to protect you network.  Microsoft releases new patches monthly for many of their proprietary programs; many of which are deemed critical.  Once you take the steps to install patches it becomes equally important to monitor system resources.   Analyses of server logs from businesses that have experienced network problems regularly reveal errors and identifiable attempted attacks on system resources.  Because patch installation can cause unexpected complications and modern viruses can circumvent security systems we strongly recommend that you allow qualified professionals to patch and monitor your systems.  IT Computer Support of New York prevents patch disasters through regular server backup tests and an analysis of patch compatibility.  Without these added steps even preventative measures against malware can result in disaster.

Throughout the month of April and the rest of the year it is important to be aware of the performance of your business networks.  Sluggish performance and unexpected behavior should be investigated immediately.  The best way to protect your business is to ensure that you have a system in place to administer regular patches. IT Computer Support of New York offers monitor services and critical server patching to all of our clients. If you would like to find out how to schedule a regular patching time, contact Maureen McHugh today.
